![]() Teaching Philosophy Statement As a current gymnastics coach I have come to learn that coaching is a lot like teaching. Therefore my metaphor for teaching is, being a teacher is like being a gymnastics coach, the students are the gymnasts and you are the teacher. Like a teacher, a coach guides them and teaches them new skills to overcome obstacles and excel with new found knowledge. I believe that even when the going gets tough that there are ways to succeed and move on from that obstacle. Since I was a gymnast I know exactly how it relates to being a student. When I wanted a new skill to move up to a higher level I had to work really hard and push myself to get there and that is the same with being a student. As a student when something didn't come easy to me, math, I always would give it extra time and give it my focus over the other areas in school that came easier to me. Teaching and coaching go hand in hand too. I have found through my observations that a teacher is someone the students look up to and come to when they need help, which is just like coaching. When coaching, my students will always come up to me and ask me for guidance and help with skills, they always want to ask me about my life and tell me about theirs, meaning that I am a role model to them, just like a teacher is a role model to their students. Being a role model to your students means that you have to be careful with every move you make because someone will always be watching and repeating what you do. I have found this to be true when I lead stretching in coaching because if my leg is bent so will my students legs, if I am pointing my toes so will my students, and that coincides with teaching too. When a teacher shows an assignment and gives out directions the students are going to follow exactly what the directions say and what the teacher has showed them, if the teacher makes a mistake the students are bound to make the same mistake as the teacher did. By being a role model to your students whether you are a teacher or a coach means that you have to be careful with what you do inside class and outside of class too because your actions outside of class can have an effect on your students too. Coaching and teaching both can give you satisfying results when you see your students excel and learn something new. When students, whether they are gymnasts or elementary students, learn something new or grasp that “ah-ha” moment it is satisfying for both a coach and a teacher. Coaches teach their students how to do new skills or how to make their skills better and teachers teach their students how to solve problems in certain subjects like math or English. When a coach or a teacher sees a student grasp a new concept it not only makes the student feel accomplished but the teacher too. A teacher and a coach will feel accomplished when a student grasps something new because that means that we are doing our job and that we are doing it right because our students are learning. Sometimes it may take more than one try but a coach and a teacher should never give up and neither should the student. To never give up and reach your goal as either a coach, a teacher, or a student means that you have overcome an obstacle whether it be big or small, and that you will excel. Teaching and coaching go hand in hand and a teacher may as well be a coach and a coach may as well be a teacher. Either way you put it both coaching and teaching have similar effects when it comes to their students and how they should teach them and what they should do. My philosophy for teaching will always stay as teaching is like being coach because as a teacher you need to also be a coach to your students.
